The late-night incident closed northbound Interstate 71 near the Norwood Lateral for several hours as Cincinnati police investigated.
CINCINNATI, OH — A 19-year-old man was killed and two other men were injured after a shooting and crash late Saturday on Interstate 71 near the Norwood Lateral, according to Cincinnati police.
Officers responded around 11 p.m. Saturday to the northbound lanes of I-71 near the 8-mile marker after a reported shooting. When police arrived, they found a Nissan Altima that had been involved in a crash with three people inside. Authorities have not publicly established the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting and crash.
Police identified the man who died as 19-year-old Amarion Waver. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries, including a gunshot wound, and was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, police said.
A second 19-year-old man was also taken to the hospital with injuries described by police as not life-threatening. Authorities had not publicly identified either of the surviving men as of Monday.
The incident forced authorities to close the northbound lanes of I-71 near the Norwood Lateral for several hours while police and other emergency personnel worked at the scene. The closure caused a significant overnight traffic backup before the highway reopened.
Police have not said what led to the shooting or whether investigators believe the people involved knew one another. No suspect information had been released, and authorities had not announced an arrest in connection with the shooting.
Investigators also had not publicly detailed how the Nissan crashed or clarified whether gunfire occurred before, during or after the collision. Available police information describes the shooting and crash as part of the same late-night incident, but several details about what happened remain under investigation.
The Cincinnati Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating Waver’s death. Police had not announced a motive or additional developments in the case as of Monday.
