One killed, six more injured in mass shooting at the park

ROCHESTER, NY – A park outing turned deadly on Sunday when gunfire shattered the peace at Rochester’s Maplewood Park. According to police, a person in their 20s was killed and another was left with life-threatening injuries. Furthermore, five more individuals were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Around 6:20 p.m., amid festive scenes of barbecuing and people enjoying the summer weather, shots rang out causing panic amongst park-goers. A chaotic exodus ensued as those present at the time attempted to escape the unexpected threat. Footage of the scene was purportedly posted on social media.

Police are still working to reveal the details of the incident, including how many people were involved in the shooting. The deceased’s identity has yet to be released as family members are still to be notified.

Despite the somewhat clearer understanding of the incident, arrests have yet to be made. Authorities were scrutinizing the crime scene into late Sunday evening and are also examining ballistic evidence from the large park field.

Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello implored anyone present to share any relevant video footage or tips linked to the event with the police. Acknowledging the normality of the day’s activities prior to the eruption of violence, Bello condemned the act as “incredibly unacceptable in our society”.

Located in Upstate New York, Maplewood Park is praised on the city’s website for its “breathtaking scenic views”, and is a favorite among the community in Rochester.
