Police Search NC State Fraternity House Amid Hazing Investigation

Sigma Nu remains suspended while university officials and campus police conduct separate investigations into allegations involving the fraternity.

RALEIGH, NC — NC State University police, assisted by other law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant Friday at the Sigma Nu fraternity house as part of an ongoing criminal investigation tied to hazing allegations involving the chapter.

The Oct. 30 search marked a significant development in an investigation that became public earlier in the week. Sigma Nu’s Beta Tau chapter is on interim suspension while NC State conducts an internal review under its student conduct process. Campus police are conducting a separate criminal investigation. The university has not disclosed what investigators were seeking in the search or whether anything was seized.

NC State said its police department carried out the warrant with assistance from partner law enforcement agencies. ABC11 reported that State Bureau of Investigation agents were among those at the fraternity house. The university said it would not provide additional details because doing so could affect the integrity of the investigation. No criminal charges had been announced in connection with the case as of Saturday.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said Thursday that her office had been communicating with NC State police and that she anticipated the investigation could lead to criminal charges. Freeman stressed that the inquiry was still in its early stages and said investigators were working to conduct a prompt but thorough review. Her comments did not amount to a charging decision, and authorities have not publicly identified any person as a suspect.

The investigation follows reports of alleged hazing connected to Sigma Nu. NC State said earlier in the week that it was examining allegations involving the fraternity and had placed the chapter on interim suspension pending further investigation. Sigma Nu’s national organization also suspended the Beta Tau chapter’s activities and said it was cooperating with university and law enforcement procedures.

Sigma Nu’s national organization said hazing is prohibited by the fraternity, NC State and North Carolina law. The organization said any chapter or member found responsible for hazing should face accountability under applicable procedures. The fraternity has not publicly acknowledged that the allegations against the chapter are true, and no findings establishing responsibility in the current investigation have been announced.

An NC State campus crime log also contains an anonymous Oct. 14 report alleging hazing and the use of drugs by an unspecified fraternity. News organizations have reported on that entry, but the university has not confirmed that the crime-log report is connected to the Sigma Nu investigation. Because the log does not name the fraternity, the two matters cannot be treated as the same incident based on the information released so far.

The case drew additional attention Wednesday when a white sheet bearing the words “Relax Pal” was seen outside the Sigma Nu house and was later removed, according to ABC11. It remains unclear who placed the message there or whether it had any connection to the hazing investigation. Authorities have not cited the banner as evidence in the criminal inquiry.

The search comes as university officials continue their own administrative review. NC State has said it does not tolerate hazing and that student safety and well-being are priorities. An interim suspension restricts chapter activity while allegations are investigated; it does not by itself establish that the fraternity or any individual violated university rules or criminal law.

Investigators have not publicly released the search warrant, described what evidence may have been sought or announced arrests. The university has also not provided a timetable for completing either the internal investigation or the criminal case. Sigma Nu remains suspended while both processes continue.
