Rooftop party mass shooting leaves 10 people injured

MADISON, WI – Early Sunday saw a shooting at a Madison apartment complex, injuring at least 10 individuals, according to Madison authorities. It was initially reported that officers were called to the site for a party being held at the rooftop of The Lux, a high-rise apartment on West Johnson Street. However, Madison Police Department (MPD)’s Lt. Caleb Johnson stated that they soon realized a shooting had occurred upon their arrival.

One gunshot victim was discovered at the scene, with potential traces that others could have been shot. A search operation uncovered more injured individuals, leading the Madison Fire Department (MFD) to dispatch triage, treatment, and transportation teams to the site.

The MFD, along with the Dane County Public Safety Communications Center (911), implemented “Base Hospital” procedures – a protocol facilitating coordination between first response agencies and local hospitals to ensure appropriate care is available for patients based on their specific medical needs.

Of the 10 wounded, five victims, aged between 14 and 23, were immediately taken to the hospital for gunshot wounds. Other injured parties either self-reported to nearby medical facilities or chose not to seek medical attention for injuries sustained while escaping the incident site.

As Madison Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Fryer explained, “We are still having injured people contact police/dispatch and showing up at area hospitals to seek medical care.” The current understanding is that none of the injuries sustained are expected to be life-threatening in nature.

Thus far, the MPD suspects the shooting was an act of targeted violence, but no suspects have been identified. The MPD’s Violent Crime Unit is currently heading the investigation. A Sunday morning press conference offered further updates on the situation.
