Boston police said the homicide investigation remains active after the victim was shot early May 22.
BOSTON, MA — A young man died after a shooting near 260 Bowdoin St. in Dorchester early May 22, Boston police said, as homicide detectives reviewed evidence from a scene near Hamilton Street.
The victim was identified by family members and local reporting as Giovanni “Gio” Bala, a Dorchester man in his early 20s who had recently become a union carpenter. Police have not announced an arrest or a motive. The shooting added to concern in the neighborhood as residents, workers and relatives described a sudden burst of violence in a busy area of Bowdoin Street.
Police said officers assigned to District C-11 in Dorchester responded at about 1:05 a.m. May 22 to a radio call for a person shot near 260 Bowdoin St. Officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Boston Police Department homicide detectives took over the case and began reviewing the facts and circumstances of the shooting. The department did not release the victim’s name in its first public statement.
The shooting happened near Bowdoin and Hamilton streets, where investigators placed yellow crime scene tape and worked around a parking lot. Local reports said surveillance video showed people running and ducking behind cars as shots were fired. Oral Pierre, manager of One Family Diner, said the scene was frightening when he arrived to open the restaurant. “Sad day,” Pierre said. “To see people getting shot like that, it was scary.” The diner gave surveillance footage to police, according to local reports.
Family members said Bala had gone to the Bowdoin Street area the night before for a friend’s graduation celebration. The exact sequence before the shooting remains unclear. Relatives described him as a hard worker who loved basketball, had completed a training program and had started work as a union carpenter. His sister, Leslie Bala, said he was the “light” in the family and someone who brought people together. She said the family wanted justice and still had no answer for why he was killed.
Police did not say whether the victim was targeted, whether more than one shooter was involved or whether any weapon had been recovered. Local reports said several vehicles were examined or towed from the area. One witness who lives nearby said he heard loud bangs, commotion and sirens. The shooting was recorded by nearby cameras, but police have not released the footage. Investigators have not publicly named any suspect.
The death came during a period of concern over shootings in Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan as summer approached. Local reporting described Bala’s death as Boston’s sixth homicide of 2026 at that point, based on police statistics. Days before the shooting, city officials had discussed a summer safety plan in Dorchester. Community members and advocates had also raised concerns about violence prevention funding and the need for a stronger neighborhood response.
The case remains with the Boston Police Department’s Homicide Unit. Detectives are expected to continue reviewing video, witness statements, forensic evidence and any tips tied to the Bowdoin Street scene. No court date has been scheduled because no arrest has been announced. Police said the investigation is active and ongoing. The department also said information can be submitted anonymously through CrimeStoppers, including photos or videos related to the case.
A sidewalk memorial took shape near Bowdoin Street after Bala’s death, with candles and messages from people who knew him. Relatives said he grew up in Dorchester, attended local schools and was active in basketball before moving into the trades. Leslie Bala said her brother often helped family members and kept religious items, including rosaries and St. Michael pendants, close to him. Friends and relatives remembered him as a peacemaker with a large circle of friends.
As of June 23, police have not announced an arrest in the Bowdoin Street killing. The next public milestone would be any police update identifying a suspect, a motive or a court filing tied to the homicide investigation.
