Shootings Leave One Dead, Woman Wounded

Police said the shootings happened Tuesday night in Back of the Yards and Englewood.

CHICAGO, IL — A 26-year-old man was killed and a 66-year-old woman was critically wounded Tuesday night in two shootings less than a mile apart on Chicago’s South Side, police said.

The shootings brought detectives to Back of the Yards and Englewood within about three hours of each other. Police had not announced arrests in either case by Wednesday morning. Investigators were working to determine whether the cases were connected, though officials had not publicly linked them.

The first shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Tuesday near West 54th and South Peoria streets in Back of the Yards. Officers found a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Daryle Hall of Chicago. Police did not immediately release details about what led to the gunfire, whether Hall was the intended target or whether more than one person fired shots. No suspect description was released by Wednesday morning.

About three hours later, police responded to another shooting near West 59th and South Halsted streets in Englewood. A 66-year-old woman was outside waiting for a ride when two dark-colored vehicles drove by and people inside exchanged gunfire, police said. The woman was struck in the chest by what police described as a stray bullet. Paramedics treated her at the scene before she was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Police did not release her name, and officials did not say whether anyone in either vehicle was hit.

The two scenes sit in neighboring South Side communities divided by blocks of homes, businesses, rail lines and busy corridors. The Back of the Yards shooting happened near a residential and industrial area west of Halsted Street. The Englewood shooting took place near a major intersection where people pass through by car, bus and on foot. The shootings came days after Chicago police reported deadly Fourth of July weekend violence across the city, adding to pressure on investigators and neighborhood residents already dealing with summer gunfire.

Area One detectives are investigating both shootings. Police said no one was in custody as of Wednesday morning. In the Back of the Yards case, detectives were expected to review nearby surveillance video, speak with witnesses and collect evidence from the block where Hall was found. In Englewood, investigators were looking into the two vehicles involved in the exchange of gunfire and trying to determine who fired the shot that hit the woman. Police had not announced charges, a motive or a public briefing in either case.

The shootings left two separate blocks marked by police tape and emergency lights Tuesday night. In Back of the Yards, officers responded after the man was found wounded near 54th and Peoria. In Englewood, the woman was struck while doing an everyday task, waiting outside for transportation. Police said the gunfire there came from vehicles passing through the area, not from a confrontation involving the woman. Officials did not release additional witness statements by Wednesday morning.

By Wednesday, Hall’s death was being handled as a homicide, and the wounded woman remained hospitalized in critical condition. Detectives continued reviewing evidence in both cases, with the next major update expected when police announce an arrest, identify suspects or release new details.
