Siblings arrested for shooting and killing tow truck driver

COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina man Steve W. Hughes was fatally shot as he attempted to repossess a vehicle. The 46-year-old tow truck driver’s bullet-riddled truck was discovered by deputies on the morning of June 12. When officers found the truck, the driver’s door was still open, and the lights were flashing.

Rescue workers rushed Hughes to the hospital, where he later succumbed to a gunshot wound. The investigation led by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department points to a vehicle repossession attempt as the motive behind the deadly shooting.

As a result of the investigation, 20-year-old Raheem De’Angelo Jackson was detained and is facing charges of murder and firearm possession during a violent crime. His sister, Essence Taniyah Jackson, 19, who authorities consider a “co-conspirator,” was also taken into custody and faces a charge of murder. Both siblings were booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

As of the afternoon of June 18, the court records did not yet indicate if Raheem had entered a plea or had retained a lawyer for his defense.

Essence’s court records are not yet publically accessible at this time. The investigation into the deadly shooting continues, with the brother’s second court appearance scheduled for June 20.
