Six students injured in school stabbing

LISBON, PORTUGAL – A violent episode involving a 12-year-old boy who stabbed six classmates in Azambuja, near Lisbon, has sent shockwaves through Portugal. The rare incident involved children between the ages of 11 and 14.

The Portuguese national police confirmed that the young attacker is now in custody but have not provided a motive. Among the victims, one boy suffered a serious chest wound and is hospitalized in Lisbon but is expected to recover. Azambuja Mayor Silvino Lúcio noted that five girls sustained minor arm injuries.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro took to social media platform X to denounce the violence and send well wishes to the affected children. He described the incident as unusual for Portuguese society.

“It was an isolated act and a strange occurrence in Portuguese society, but one that should make everyone who works in public space reflect with a sense of responsibility,” Montenegro said.
