LOCUST GROVE, GA – A tornado swept through metro Atlanta, leaving a path of destruction in its wake, particularly in Henry County. Among those affected was Trey Shanny, an actor known for his role in the HBO series “The Wire.” Shanny and his son, Malachi, found themselves at the mercy of nature’s fury when the storm struck their home in Locust Grove.
The tornado hit just after the father and son had spent a day together following a press event. Trey had gone to rest upstairs while Malachi was in his room playing video games around 3:30 p.m. when disaster struck. The house collapsed, leaving Trey unconscious and buried under debris. He awoke to the terrifying sight of his son missing.
Malachi was discovered 300 feet away from their home, in a wooded area. Neighbors rallied to help locate him, and he was found with serious injuries, including broken ribs and a fractured face. Currently, Malachi is in the ICU, fighting for his life. Despite the severity of his injuries, Trey remains hopeful, describing his son as strong and resilient.
After being discharged from the hospital himself, Trey rushed to be by his son’s side. He expressed a mix of gratitude and disbelief, thankful that his wife was not home during the incident but overwhelmed by the devastation left behind. The family’s house was the only one in the neighborhood to suffer such extensive damage. While nearby homes lost siding and windows, Trey’s home was completely leveled.
The National Weather Service, along with local fire officials, are on-site assessing the damage. Trey, while grappling with the situation, remains focused on Malachi’s recovery, expressing a determination to rebuild both physically and emotionally.
