Southfield stabbing victim crashes SUV after fleeing fight

Police said the wounded 28-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition after surgery.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — A 28-year-old woman crashed an SUV near a Southfield apartment complex Thursday after police said another woman stabbed her twice during a fight tied to the father of their children.

The victim was hospitalized and expected to survive after undergoing surgery, police said. The case drew a large police response near the Oxley Apartments and led investigators from Southfield to Detroit, where officers arrested a 24-year-old suspect. Authorities said both women have children with the same man, but the exact reason the dispute turned violent remained unclear.

The crash was reported Thursday morning outside Oxley Apartments, 16176 Cumberland Road, after the wounded woman lost control of a Chevrolet Equinox. Early information from police said the SUV struck a fence near the apartment complex. Later details said the woman had fled after being stabbed on Providence Drive outside the complex, then crashed nearby, striking a tree as the airbags deployed. Deputy Chief Aaron Huguley of the Southfield Police Department said the case stood out because a fight quickly turned into a serious assault. “Weapons, firearms, knives, any of those type of things will get you into far more trouble than they get you out of,” Huguley said.

Police said the two women were in separate vehicles and had each planned to visit the father of their children, who lives nearby. At some point, they noticed each other, pulled over near the residence and began fighting, according to investigators. The victim was stabbed twice, including at least one wound to her back, police said. After she was wounded, she got back into her SUV and drove away before the crash. Officials said she was taken to a hospital in stable condition after surgery. Police did not release her name. The suspect’s name also was not released because she had not yet been arraigned.

The stabbing was described by police as part of a domestic situation, though officials did not say whether the fight happened inside or outside the residence in every early account. Investigators said the assault was connected to the women’s shared relationship with the same man through their children, but they did not disclose what was said before the fight or whether the man witnessed the confrontation. The scene left officers handling two connected investigations at once: the assault and the crash. The SUV damage, airbag deployment, the crash location and the victim’s injuries all became part of the case file as detectives worked to map the brief chain of events from the fight to the crash.

The case moved quickly after the crash. Police said the 24-year-old suspect left Southfield and went to a home in Detroit, where she was arrested. Authorities did not immediately announce formal charges Thursday. Huguley said the suspect could be arraigned as soon as Friday, depending on the review of the case. Prosecutors were expected to weigh the police report, medical records, witness statements and any physical evidence from the scene before deciding the final charges. Investigators also had to confirm where the stabbing began, how the fight escalated and whether any additional people were present when the women pulled over near the residence.

The scene outside the apartment complex drew attention because the reported stabbing and crash happened in a residential area during the morning. Police vehicles gathered near the damaged SUV and the apartment property as officers worked around the crash site. The victim’s vehicle, described as a Chevrolet Equinox, came to rest after she tried to get away from the assault, police said. Huguley framed the case as a warning about how quickly a personal dispute can turn into a violent criminal investigation. He said people should rely on conflict resolution skills “so we have more peaceful outcomes.”

As of the latest update, the victim remained in stable condition and the suspect was in custody. The next major step in the case was the suspect’s expected arraignment, which police said could happen Friday.
