St. Louis Shootings Leave Three Dead

Police said the four shootings happened from just before midnight Saturday to about 4 a.m. Sunday.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Three people were killed and four others were injured in four separate shootings across St. Louis from late Saturday into early Sunday, police said, sending homicide detectives to scenes in Boulevard Heights, Downtown West, Washington Avenue and Soulard.

The shootings unfolded over roughly four hours, beginning shortly before midnight June 27 and ending around 4 a.m. June 28. Police reported one person detained after the first shooting, but no charges had been announced in the other cases in the early reports. Investigators said they were still working to determine what led to the violence, whether any of the shootings were connected and who fired the shots.

The first shooting happened just before midnight at a QuikTrip in the 6900 block of Gravois Avenue in Boulevard Heights. District 1 officers found a 22-year-old man near the counter who was not conscious or breathing. He died at the scene. A 27-year-old man was found shot near the coolers and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police said that while officers were still at the store, a 29-year-old man called and said he had been involved in the shooting. Officers found him and detained him while the investigation continued. Homicide detectives took over the case.

About two hours later, officers were called to another shooting in Downtown West. Police said a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 1900 block of Locust Street at about 1:50 a.m. A preliminary investigation found that an unknown man fired shots in the block. Paramedics took the injured man to a hospital, where police listed him in critical but stable condition. The department said detectives were still reviewing the circumstances of the shooting, including what happened before the gunfire and whether the shooter left the area on foot or in a vehicle.

Minutes after the Locust Street shooting, District 4 officers were flagged down in front of the 1300 block of Washington Avenue. Police said they found a 26-year-old woman with a gunshot wound at about 1:53 a.m. Officers began life-saving measures until emergency medical crews arrived. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she died. Detectives later learned that two other women, ages 19 and 23, had arrived separately at area hospitals with gunshot wounds. Police first listed both women in critical but stable condition, and later said their injuries were not life-threatening.

The final fatal shooting was reported around 4 a.m. in Soulard, in the 1500 block of South 7th Street near Carroll Street. District 3 officers found a 20-year-old man who had been shot in the neck. Police said several bystanders were giving aid when officers arrived, but the man died at the scene after emergency crews were called. Family members identified him as Darwin Maldonado-Vargas. A preliminary investigation found that a large fight broke out among a group of people before shots were fired, striking Maldonado-Vargas.

The overnight violence cut across several parts of the city, from a South City convenience store to streets near downtown entertainment areas. The shootings also came as police continued to handle other summer public safety calls across St. Louis, including downtown crowd and curfew enforcement tied to the July Fourth period. In the Washington Avenue case, officers were already close enough to be flagged down. In Soulard, bystanders tried to help before police and medics arrived. In the Boulevard Heights case, the shooting happened inside a business open late at night.

Police did not release the names of the 22-year-old man killed on Gravois Avenue or the 26-year-old woman killed on Washington Avenue in the first reports reviewed. The conditions of the surviving victims were reported as stable, critical but stable or not life-threatening, depending on the case and update. Police had not said whether the same weapon, suspect or dispute linked any of the four scenes. Each case was being handled through the department’s homicide or district investigative units, with detectives asking for witness information as they built timelines from calls, hospital reports and scene evidence.

No court filing had been announced in the early reports tied to the overnight shootings. The 29-year-old man detained after the QuikTrip shooting was held pending further investigation, police said. Homicide detectives were assigned to the fatal shootings on Gravois Avenue, Washington Avenue and South 7th Street. District detectives were handling the Locust Street shooting. Police said the next steps included identifying suspects, reviewing evidence from each scene, confirming victim information and determining whether any case would be presented to prosecutors.

The scenes showed the spread of the night’s violence. At the Gravois Avenue store, police found one victim near the counter and another by the coolers. On Washington Avenue, officers began aid on the sidewalk or street area before medics arrived. In Soulard, a late-night fight had already drawn a crowd before the fatal shot was fired, according to police. Investigators did not release detailed witness statements, but their early accounts pointed to separate calls and fast-moving responses as officers moved from one neighborhood to another before sunrise.

As of July 6, the four shootings remained under investigation, with one person detained in the Boulevard Heights case and no broader link publicly confirmed. The next milestone will be any police update identifying additional suspects, filing charges or naming the remaining victims.
