Street Shaken After Woman Shot Multiple Times In Driveway

Police said no arrest had been made after the Tuesday morning shooting on Birdie Lane.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A woman was shot multiple times Tuesday morning outside a home on Birdie Lane in Upper Marlboro, leaving her hospitalized in critical condition as Prince George’s County police searched for a suspect.

The shooting brought a heavy police response to the Somerset Square community, where neighbors described an unusual scene of crime tape, police cruisers and evidence markers in a residential driveway. Authorities said the investigation remained active Tuesday afternoon, with detectives working to determine who fired the shots and what led to the attack.

Police said the shooting happened just after 7 a.m. in the 10400 block of Birdie Lane. Officers were called around 7:20 a.m. after a report of gunfire and found the woman outside the home. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Brian Fischer of the Prince George’s County Police Department said detectives were working the case closely. “That’s why our detectives are out there and working this case very hard,” Fischer said.

Investigators remained on the block for several hours after the shooting. Evidence markers were visible in the driveway, including near shell casings. Police had not released the victim’s name, age or a detailed medical update by Tuesday evening. They also had not announced a suspect description or said whether the woman knew the shooter. Doorbell camera audio obtained by local reporters captured several gunshots, and some neighbors said they saw the victim in the driveway and a vehicle leaving the area afterward.

Residents said the shooting stood out because the neighborhood is normally quiet. One longtime resident said she had lived there for 31 years and could not recall violence like it in the community. Another neighbor, Jason Nwamara, said the sudden police presence surprised people who see the area as safe. “Nothing ever happens here,” Nwamara said. Other residents said they heard the gunfire early in the morning before seeing officers block off streets near the home.

Detectives went door to door Tuesday asking neighbors whether they saw or heard anything before, during or after the shooting. Police were also reviewing video and physical evidence from the scene. No charges had been filed, and no arrest had been announced. Officials did not say whether the shooting appeared targeted, domestic-related or connected to any other incident in Prince George’s County.

The attack came as people in the neighborhood were beginning their morning routines. Some residents said they first noticed something was wrong when they returned to the street and saw yellow tape near the home. Others said they heard multiple shots but did not immediately know where they came from. The investigation kept officers on Birdie Lane for at least five hours as police marked evidence and spoke with residents.

The woman remained hospitalized as of the latest public update Tuesday. Police said the search for the shooter was continuing, and the next major step in the case will be identifying a suspect and determining a motive.
