One man died and another was hospitalized after gunfire early Sunday, while Broward sheriff’s detectives continued investigating what led to the shooting.
LAUDERDALE LAKES, FL — One man was killed and another was hospitalized after a shooting early Sunday in Lauderdale Lakes, and one person was detained as investigators worked to determine what happened, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies received reports of a shooting at about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 20 in the 3200 block of Northwest 37th Street, authorities said. Deputies arriving in the area found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took him to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not publicly disclosed his condition by early Monday.
Investigators also learned that a second man who had been shot arrived at a nearby hospital by private means. He later died from his injuries, according to authorities. Officials had not released the identities of either shooting victim.
One person was detained during the investigation, BSO said. Authorities had not announced an arrest or criminal charges and had not publicly identified the detained person. Officials also had not said what connection, if any, that person had to either of the men who were shot.
Investigators spent hours examining the area after the shooting. Local television footage showed sections of the neighborhood blocked with crime scene tape as detectives worked near vehicles and searched for evidence. A law enforcement K-9 was also seen assisting investigators.
Residents told local news outlets that the gunfire woke people in the neighborhood. Witnesses described hearing several loud shots before seeing a large law enforcement response outside. Some residents were temporarily kept away from the immediate scene while investigators continued their work.
Authorities have not released information about what may have led to the shooting, whether the two victims knew each other or whether detectives have recovered a weapon connected to the case. No motive had been announced.
BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating. The agency had not announced additional arrests or released the name of the man who died as of Monday, and the investigation remained active.
