MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – In a shocking turn of events, a highly respected former principal, Paul Hogan, 61, lost his life due to an accidental fall at St. Margaret’s Primary School in Spotswood, Melbourne. He fell from the school’s roof while retrieving balls at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, leading to severe head injuries.
Despite being promptly taken to the hospital, Hogan succumbed to his injuries on Friday. At the time of the accident, Hogan had been serving as a temporary teacher at the school.
Hogan’s passing has profoundly affected those who knew him, as he is remembered as an educator who brought joy into the lives of students and colleagues.
A statement from the school to its families highlighted Hogan’s illustrious career, which included a tenure as the principal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Sunbury starting in 2009. He later served as the principal at St. Mary’s Primary School in Ascot Vale until his retirement in 2022, after which he continued as a part-time and substitute teacher.
Dr. Edward Simons, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) executive director, expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss of Hogan. In his statement, Simons lauded Hogan as a beloved figure in the Catholic school system and a mentor to many. MACS has activated specialist support services for the affected family and other potentially impacted staff and students in light of the unfortunate event.
Tributes and condolences from colleagues like Michael Di Nuzzo, principal of St. Therese’s Primary School, have continued to pour in, expressing appreciation for Hogan’s remarkable contribution to MACS schools.
An investigation led by Worksafe into the incident is ongoing.
