CASA GRANDE, AZ – A juvenile court has convicted a 14-year-old boy in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old cheerleader, Hailey Stephens, during a house party in Casa Grande last November. The boy, who was 13 when the incident occurred, faced trial in Pinal County as a juvenile.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene the night of the tragedy, with over 60 shots being fired, leading to multiple arrests primarily involving teenage boys. However, only one individual, the young defendant, was brought to trial. Hailey was tragically killed by a stray bullet, while her friend survived being struck.
For Vanessa Stephens, Hailey’s mother, the past year has been a relentless nightmare. Vanessa reflects on the vibrant spirit of her daughter in the sanctuary of Hailey’s bedroom, a place filled with memories and comfort.
As Vanessa sat through the trial, she grappled with the harsh reality uncovered in court. The prosecution’s case laid out the grim details, challenging Vanessa’s sense of disbelief over a child committing such a crime. “It’s really hard to swallow that a 13-year-old [could do this],” she stated, adding that her own son is the same age as the convicted.
The sentencing will take place on November 14, with the offender facing detention until he turns 18, per Arizona state law.
In remembrance, Hailey’s family established the Hailey Lynn Stephens Foundation, which awards scholarships to Casa Grande Union High School students pursuing college. A memorial balloon release event is planned for November 23 at the high school, celebrating Hailey’s life and dreams.
