Teen dies in shooting near Michigan State Fair

NOVI, MI – A teenager died, and another was injured in a shooting incident near the Michigan State Fair in Novi on Saturday night, triggering an ongoing investigation by the local police department.

According to Novi law enforcement, at approximately 9:56 pm, gunshots were heard near the southwest parking lot of the Suburban Collection Showplace, causing panic amongst fairgoers. The incident had first been reported as an active shooter situation, soliciting swift response from various nearby law enforcement agencies.

Both victims, aged 14, were rushed to a local hospital for immediate treatment. However, one of them succumbed to their injuries while the other was reportedly in stable condition.

The minors reportedly traveled to the fairgrounds from Detroit via an Uber. Authorities believe that an earlier altercation, which occurred in a different locality during the week, ignited the fatal conflict at the fairgrounds. No suspects have yet been identified in connection to the shooting.

Local law enforcement has urged anyone with any relevant information to reach out to the Novi Police Department. The ongoing investigation is being spearheaded by the Novi Police Department, in collaboration with Michigan State Police and the Oakland County Sheriff’s office.

Despite the unfortunate event, the Michigan State Fair will remain open, albeit with heightened security measures. These include an increased police presence, enforcing changes in entry policies and reducing operating hours. The Fair expressed its condolences for the tragic loss of young life and reassured attendees of their commitment to safety.

Following the incident, local and national officials expressed sentiments of shock and anger. State Representative Kelly Breen stated in a Facebook post that the incident does not define their community and Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell expressed her anger over the young boy’s senseless death.
