Teen sought after killing mother arrested across state line

Police say the 18-year-old was found armed in Hundred, W.Va., a day after his mother was shot dead and his father wounded in rural Pennsylvania.

NEW FREEPORT, PA — An 18-year-old accused of fatally shooting his mother and injuring his father outside a Greene County home on Friday was apprehended Saturday afternoon in northern West Virginia after a multistate search, authorities said.

The arrest concludes an overnight manhunt that began after troopers were called just before 2 p.m. Friday to Garrison Ridge Road in Freeport Township, near the community of New Freeport. Investigators identified the suspect as Jared Noll, 18, the couple’s son. West Virginia State Police detained Noll in the town of Hundred after a caller reported a person matching his description. Police said he was armed at the time of his arrest. The case now shifts to extradition and charging decisions in Pennsylvania as detectives piece together what led to the gunfire that left a mother dead and her husband hospitalized.

Responding troopers found the woman with a gunshot wound; she was taken in critical condition to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where she later died, state police said. A man, also shot, was treated at the same hospital and released in stable condition. Officials said the shooting happened outside the family’s home while younger siblings were inside; those children are now with relatives. After the shots, police said, Noll fled on foot into the surrounding hills and woods. “We used tracking dogs, we used helicopters, and we used police on foot searching rough terrain,” Pennsylvania State Police Sgt. Richard Sizer said, adding that the search covered steep stretches and patchy cell coverage. “We’re glad it’s over,” Sizer said.

Authorities described rapid coordination between agencies on both sides of the state line. Troopers from multiple Pennsylvania barracks blocked off Garrison Ridge Road and combed the wooded area through Friday night and into Saturday. Investigators distributed surveillance images as they fielded tips. Late Saturday afternoon, West Virginia troopers acting on a sighting detained Noll in Hundred, a small Wetzel County town a few miles south of the border. Police said the victims were husband and wife and that their names would be released after required notifications. Officials did not disclose the type of firearm recovered, the exact number of shots fired, or what prompted the violence. Detectives continued interviews and evidence collection Saturday evening.

The Greene County shooting unfolded on the first weekend after Christmas in one of the county’s most sparsely populated areas, where homes sit along narrow ridgelines and hollows near the Pennsylvania–West Virginia line. Troopers were dispatched shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, and quickly labeled the case an isolated, domestic incident. By nightfall, state police had issued a regional alert with Noll’s description and advised residents to avoid the search zone. Helicopters swept the ridge line while fire departments assisted with staging and perimeter control. On Saturday, authorities expanded the search grid toward the border amid reports the suspect might try to slip into West Virginia by foot.

As of Saturday night, Noll was being held in West Virginia pending extradition to Pennsylvania. Court records show he faces one count of criminal homicide and one count of attempted homicide. A Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson said Noll did not waive extradition, and it was not immediately clear when he would be returned to Greene County to face arraignment. Investigators said they expected to release additional information on the victims’ identities and official cause of death after the coroner completes preliminary findings. Officials said further updates would be provided once charging documents are finalized and a hearing schedule is set.

Residents along Garrison Ridge described a heavy police presence and hours of quiet searching punctuated by the thrum of helicopter rotors. Driveways were taped off and cruisers idled at intersections as troopers walked property lines with flashlights and tracking dogs. “The fire departments here have been great, the West Virginia State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, multiple barracks within Troop B, have been outstanding, and their hard work has put this to an end,” Sizer said. Neighbors said they were asked to remain inside while troopers canvassed the area and checked outbuildings. By dusk Saturday, tape was removed from the road and patrol cars thinned as word spread that the suspect had been found in Hundred.

Authorities said the investigation remains active with interviews of family members and collection of physical evidence from the scene. The next steps include extradition proceedings in West Virginia and, once in Pennsylvania, an initial appearance before a Greene County magistrate. No hearing dates had been set as of late Saturday. The coroner’s office will determine and release the woman’s cause and manner of death. Police said additional updates are expected after the holiday weekend as detectives synthesize witness statements, hospital records, and lab results.
