DALLAS, TX – In a shocking development, Dallas police have charged a second teenage girl with capital murder because of a fatal shooting near Victory Plaza over the weekend. The authorities are continuing their search for at least one more suspect and the actual shooter.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning when 18-year-old Jake Reynosa was reportedly accosted by at least three individuals during a robbery attempt while walking along N Houston Street and Nowitzki Way.
After locating a vehicle believed to be used by the suspects, a brief chase ensued when police attempted a traffic stop near Elm and Ervay Streets. Following the pursuit, three suspects fled on foot, leading to the capture of a 15-year-old girl. A second suspect, a 16-year-old girl, was apprehended the following day.
While neither of the arrested teenagers is accused of firing the fatal shot, their alleged involvement in the robbery qualifies them for capital murder charges under Texas law. Details about other potential accomplices remain scant, though police indicated that at least one additional male suspect is still at large.
This case is particularly unusual given the youth and gender of the suspects involved. FBI crime statistics reveal that females are suspects in fewer than 12% of murder cases in the U.S., with young women between the ages of 13 and 16 accounting for only a minuscule portion of homicides.
Despite a general decline in youth crime in Dallas County from 2018 to 2022, juvenile-involved homicides have seen a concerning increase, more than doubling during that period.
Dallas police urge anyone with information about the recent robbery and murder to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
