Authorities say surveillance footage and evidence recovered during a search helped investigators identify a suspect within hours of the Labor Day homicide.
ROUND ROCK, TX — A 26-year-old Round Rock man has been charged with murder in the Sept. 7 death of a 62-year-old Austin man found near a park bench in the Chandler Creek subdivision, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and court records.
Authorities identified the suspect as Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu and the victim as Andrew James Wimsatt. Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the 2400 block of Chandler Creek Boulevard shortly before 11 a.m. after receiving a report of an injured person in the park area. Emergency medical personnel determined that Wimsatt was dead, and the sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division began treating the case as a homicide. Ogbodiegwu was taken into custody late that night and charged with murder.
An arrest affidavit filed Sept. 9 provided new details about how investigators say they connected Ogbodiegwu to the killing. According to the affidavit, a woman reported finding Wimsatt near a park bench and called 911. Neighborhood surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed a man later identified as Wimsatt sitting on the bench shortly before 11 a.m. Another man approached him minutes later, and investigators allege the video captured a fatal knife attack. The suspect then left the area, the affidavit said.
Investigators used surveillance video from the neighborhood and nearby locations to follow the suspect’s movements before and after the attack, according to the affidavit. Video from the area also led detectives to a water fountain near a basketball court, where investigators recovered a palm print. Authorities said other recordings showed a person matching the suspect’s appearance traveling through the neighborhood before the homicide and leaving afterward.
Detectives later reviewed footage from a nearby restaurant that showed a similarly described man wearing different clothing and getting into a red SUV, according to the affidavit. Investigators traced the vehicle to Ogbodiegwu’s family and to a residence less than a mile from the park. Additional residential surveillance showed a man wearing clothing similar to that seen in the park footage walking through the area before the killing and returning shortly afterward, investigators said.
Detectives contacted Ogbodiegwu at the residence and believed he matched the person shown in the surveillance recordings, according to the affidavit. During the investigation, authorities obtained a search warrant for the property. The affidavit said detectives found clothing matching what the suspect was seen wearing in surveillance video along with a knife inside a trash bag in an outdoor garbage container. Investigators reported red stains on a pair of sweatpants and said a preliminary test on the knife indicated the possible presence of blood. Those findings remain allegations described in the arrest affidavit and have not been proven at trial.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said preliminary evidence led investigators to believe the attack was random and that Wimsatt and Ogbodiegwu did not know each other. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive. The sheriff’s office initially released a surveillance photograph while asking the public to help identify the person investigators were seeking. Ogbodiegwu was located and arrested later the same day.
The Texas Rangers are assisting the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office with the continuing investigation. Round Rock police and fire personnel also assisted during the initial response. The sheriff’s office said the case remains active and that no additional details were being released. A murder charge is an accusation, and Ogbodiegwu is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.
