EDGEWATER, IL – The family of Ashawn Davis, a 13-year-old boy from Edgewater, Illinois, came together on Tuesday night to hold a prayer vigil and demand justice for his tragic murder. The teenager was fatally shot in his neighborhood a short distance from his family’s home. The grieving relatives hosted a solemn gathering in Goose Island, characterized by cardboard cutouts of Davis and shared memories of the teen.
Stewart, the boy’s mother, insists that obtaining justice for her son’s untimely death is her primary focus. “I just want justice. No justice, no peace,” she exhorted.
The fatal shooting, which happened on Sunday night, was in a building in the 6000 block of North Kenmore Avenue that has a history of violence. The family explained that they couldn’t comprehend how such a tragedy could happen so close to home, given that the shooting took place a block away from where Ashawn lived.
Shawn Childs, Ashawn’s uncle, stated that “Ashawn was the kid that everybody loved.” Adding to the family’s heartbreak is the fact that Childs himself is an anti-violence activist who spends his life trying to prevent the very kind of tragedy that claimed his nephew’s life.
City leaders are working closely with the authorities and the owner of the crime-ridden building to investigate the rise in violence. The Chicago police confirmed that no arrests have been made so far in connection with Ashawn’s murder.
