Police say two victims were found inside a Chesterland Avenue home before the suspected gunman died on Warren Road.
LAKEWOOD, OH — Three people died Sunday after a man shot two people inside a Lakewood home, fled in a pickup truck and killed himself after a short police chase, authorities said.
The deaths left investigators working to piece together what led to the early morning violence on Chesterland Avenue. Police identified the two victims as Amanda Leigh Wakut, 33, of Lakewood, and Richard Eastin, 35, of Cleveland. The suspected gunman was identified in local reports as Stephen Davis, 45, of Fairview Park. No motive had been released as of Tuesday.
Lakewood police said officers were called around 4:26 a.m. Sunday to a home in the 2100 block of Chesterland Avenue after a man contacted his ex-wife and said he had shot two people there. The man also said he planned to kill himself, police said. When officers arrived near the home, they saw a pickup truck leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Police tried to stop the truck, but the driver fled. The chase ended in the 1200 block of Warren Road, about two miles from the home. Police said the driver got out with a handgun and refused officers’ efforts to talk with him. Lakewood Capt. Frank S. Eschweiler said officers tried to de-escalate the encounter before the man shot himself within minutes.
Officers later found Wakut and Eastin dead inside the kitchen of the Chesterland Avenue home. Police said both had been shot. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims, according to local reports. Davis was pronounced dead at the Warren Road scene. Police have not said how Davis knew Eastin. Some reports said investigators were still reviewing the relationships among the three people and the events that led to the shooting. Authorities also had not released whether any prior calls for service, court records or warnings were tied to the address or to the people involved. The case remained under investigation by Lakewood police, with evidence from both the home and the pursuit scene expected to shape the final timeline.
The shooting drew grief from friends and members of the local fitness community, where Wakut was known through powerlifting. Megann Galehouse, Wakut’s friend and business partner, said Wakut was “a mother, first and foremost.” Galehouse said Wakut had a strong reach among friends, clients and loved ones. “I can’t even tell you how many lives she’s touched,” Galehouse said. Friends said Wakut had a 7-year-old son, who was with his grandmother when the shooting happened. Eastin also was remembered by people who knew him in Cleveland. Christine Osborne, who said she knew Eastin through her job, described him as kind and generous. “He loved everybody,” Osborne said.
The first emergency call set off two connected crime scenes. One was the home on Chesterland Avenue, where officers found the two victims. The other was Warren Road, where the pursuit stopped and the suspected gunman died. Police said the pickup was seen leaving near the time officers reached the neighborhood. The chase appears to have been brief, and officers said they tried to speak with the armed man after he stopped. The shooting happened before police could resolve the standoff. Investigators have not said whether any shots were fired by officers. No other injuries were reported in the available police accounts, and no continuing threat to the public was described after the suspect’s death.
The legal path in the case is limited because the suspected gunman is dead, but police still must complete a homicide investigation. Detectives are expected to review physical evidence, interview witnesses and confirm the sequence of events before the case is closed. The medical examiner’s findings will become part of the official record for all three deaths. Police had not announced any pending charges against anyone else. Officials also had not released a full incident report by Tuesday. The central unanswered questions include why the shooting happened, what happened inside the home before police were called and whether Davis had contact with either victim shortly before the killings.
Neighbors and friends described a sudden wave of police activity before dawn Sunday, followed by news that two people had died inside the home and the suspected gunman had died after the pursuit. The deaths moved quickly from a police response to a public act of mourning, with friends sharing memories of Wakut and Eastin. Galehouse said Wakut’s laugh and humor stood out to those who loved her. Others described Eastin as warm and easy to like. The public details released so far show a short and violent timeline, but not the reason behind it. Police said that question remains part of the active investigation.
As of Tuesday, Lakewood police continued to investigate the double murder-suicide. The next major update is expected when investigators release more findings on the motive, relationships among those involved or the completed timeline.
