Investigators say surveillance video shows a struggle and rapid gunfire near a neighborhood park.
HOUSTON, TX — Three men in their 20s were wounded and taken to a hospital after a shootout in north Harris County that investigators believe began as an illegal drug transaction, authorities said. Deputies were called to the Heritage Village area Thursday after reports of gunfire near Swords Creek Road.
The men’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, but the case quickly drew attention because deputies arrived to find no victims at the scene and later learned the injured men had traveled to a hospital in a single vehicle. Investigators are now working to sort out who fired first, whether any of the wounded men were also suspects, and whether a second vehicle seen leaving the area was involved in the exchange of gunfire.
Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office responded to a shots-fired call Thursday evening in the 12100 block of Swords Creek Road, near T.C. Jester Boulevard and Spears Road. By the time law enforcement reached the neighborhood park area referenced in the call, officials said the scene had gone quiet and no one was waiting for help. Captain Buddy Gheen of the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office said investigators later learned that three men, described as Black and in their early to late 20s, arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds after leaving the neighborhood in one car. “It’s too early to say if any of the victims are considered suspects,” Gheen said, adding that investigators were still working through what happened before the shots were fired.
Detectives gathered surveillance and doorbell-camera video from nearby homes and began reconstructing the minutes around the gunfire, officials said. Investigators believe two people met in the area for an illegal narcotics transaction, then a struggle broke out and both sides pulled firearms. Authorities said the video shows a brief confrontation followed by rapid gunfire and people running or driving away. Investigators estimated that at least 10 shots were fired in the exchange, and deputies later located bullet damage in the area, including holes in fencing, but authorities did not describe any major property destruction. No one has been publicly identified, and officials said they were still confirming whether the three wounded men were directly involved in the suspected drug deal or were caught up in the shootout.
The investigation has also focused on what evidence was left behind and what may have traveled with the injured men to the hospital. Authorities said they did not recover weapons at the scene when deputies first arrived. Later, law enforcement said a firearm was located in the vehicle used to take the injured men to the hospital, though investigators cautioned that the presence of a gun in that car does not, by itself, establish who fired during the shooting. Officials said detectives were also seeking to identify and locate another vehicle described only as a white four-door sedan that investigators believe was connected to the incident. The search for that car is central to determining how many people took part and whether anyone else was hurt but did not seek treatment, authorities said.
The shooting unfolded in and around a residential neighborhood where parks and community spaces sit close to homes, making the camera footage and neighbor accounts especially important to investigators. Officials said detectives were collecting additional video from surrounding streets to map the routes of the people who fled and to pinpoint when the first confrontation began. Authorities have not released a precise sequence of who arrived first, how the meeting was set up, or what prompted the struggle. They also have not said whether any narcotics were recovered or whether the suspected transaction involved a larger investigation. For now, officials said the case remains open and active, with investigators balancing the assault investigation with potential narcotics violations that may have led to the encounter.
No arrests had been announced as of Saturday, and authorities said several key steps remain before possible charges are considered. Investigators said they were working to interview the wounded men as their medical condition allows and to compare their statements with the surveillance footage. Detectives were also expected to review ballistic evidence and any recovered shell casings to determine the number of weapons involved. In addition, officials said investigators planned to pursue legal process to collect and examine evidence tied to the hospital drop-off, including the firearm found in the vehicle, and to confirm whether it was used in the shooting. Authorities said locating the white sedan could help identify additional witnesses or suspects and clarify whether the gunfire occurred during a single confrontation or involved a brief chase through the neighborhood.
Residents in the area described a heavy law enforcement response after the report of gunfire, with multiple vehicles arriving as deputies checked the park and nearby streets. Investigators continued canvassing for cameras and witnesses after the initial call, authorities said, and officials urged anyone with video or information from the Heritage Village area to contact law enforcement. Gheen said the department’s immediate focus was separating rumor from verifiable details and determining the roles of everyone involved. “We’re still trying to confirm exactly who was involved in the deal and who was involved in the shooting,” he said, as investigators worked to identify the person or people associated with the second vehicle.
The case remained under investigation Saturday, with detectives continuing to review video and search for the white sedan linked to the incident. Authorities said the next major step will be completing interviews and evidence review that could clarify suspects and potential charges in the coming days.
