Police said the 32-year-old victim died in San Antonio after being stabbed multiple times Thursday.
DEL RIO, TX — Three women were charged with murder after a 32-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times Thursday afternoon in Del Rio and later died at a San Antonio hospital, police said.
Del Rio police identified the suspects as Kitty Mia Diaz, 21; Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19; and Kyandra Renee Faz, 21. The arrests came within hours of the reported attack, which investigators traced to the 800 block of East 10th Street. Police said the case remains active, and additional charges may be filed as detectives continue gathering evidence.
Officers first responded shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, where a woman had arrived with multiple stab wounds. Investigators said they later determined the assault happened on East 10th Street, a busy area of Del Rio near businesses and neighborhood traffic. Because of the severity of her injuries, the woman was transferred to a San Antonio medical facility for emergency treatment. Police said she died that evening, after the suspects had already been taken into custody.
Detectives moved quickly through the early stages of the investigation, police said. They reviewed surveillance video, processed evidence and interviewed witnesses before identifying the three women as suspects. Around 4 p.m., officers located and arrested Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz without incident. Faz was arrested a short time later. All three women were taken to the Del Rio Police Department for booking and processing before being transferred to the GEO Correctional Facility.
Authorities have not released a motive. Police also have not publicly described what led up to the stabbing or said whether the women knew the victim before the attack. Friends and local reports identified the victim as Caroline “Caro” Peña, a mother of five. Police initially described the victim as a 32-year-old woman and said the formal investigation was continuing as officers worked to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The victim’s death turned the case from a stabbing investigation into a homicide investigation Thursday night. Police said investigators were notified at about 9 p.m. that the woman had died from her injuries. After that notification, Faz, Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz were each charged with murder. The three remained held pending magistration, the court process in which a judge advises defendants of charges and sets bond conditions.
The stabbing drew attention across Del Rio, a Val Verde County city on the Texas-Mexico border. The reported crime scene on East 10th Street sits in a commercial corridor where local traffic moves between homes, restaurants and small businesses. Witness accounts and surveillance evidence are expected to remain central to the case as investigators work to build a timeline of the attack and the arrests that followed.
Friends of Peña described her as a devoted mother and a loyal friend. Zelina Ochoa, who said she had known Peña since they were teen mothers, said Peña was the kind of person who gave what she had to others. “If you needed something and she had it, even if it was her last, she’d give it to you,” Ochoa said. Another friend, Christina Salinas, said she had spent time with Peña the night before the stabbing and later learned she had missed a call from her shortly before the confrontation.
The case now moves into its first court stage while police continue the investigation. As of Sunday, June 28, officials had announced murder charges against all three suspects, but had not publicly released a motive or a complete account of what happened before the stabbing.
