Authorities said the victims were found dead early Sunday at an FM 2920 apartment complex.
SPRING, TX — A man and woman were found dead with gunshot wounds early Sunday at a Spring-area apartment complex, and a 32-year-old man has been charged in one of the deaths, Harris County authorities said.
Deputies said the shooting followed a reported domestic violence situation at an apartment complex on FM 2920 near Ella Boulevard. The dead were identified as 34-year-old Estelle Camarillo and 22-year-old Junior Ruiz. Adrian Abreu was arrested after the shooting and booked into the Harris County Jail.
Harris County deputies were called to the complex about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found Camarillo and Ruiz with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Camarillo and Abreu had gone to the complex together after a resident reported being afraid of a man outside her apartment because of prior alleged abuse. Gonzalez said Camarillo and Abreu were in a dating relationship, and Abreu “may have been an acquaintance” of Ruiz.
Authorities said the shooting happened after the pair arrived to help the resident. Investigators said a confrontation followed between Abreu and Ruiz. The exact sequence of events remained under review Monday, including Ruiz’s role in the earlier domestic disturbance and how Camarillo was struck. Deputies have not said whether Camarillo or Ruiz lived at the complex. Officials also have not released the name of the resident who called for help or described the full relationship between that person and Ruiz.
Abreu was charged with manslaughter in Camarillo’s death and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Court records cited by local authorities accuse him of recklessly causing Camarillo’s death by firing a gun in her direction while they were in a confined space. Gonzalez said the death investigation involving Ruiz will be presented to a grand jury. That means prosecutors may seek a separate decision on whether additional charges should be filed in Ruiz’s death.
The case drew a large law enforcement response to the apartment property, where deputies secured the area and homicide investigators began collecting evidence. The shooting unfolded during the Memorial Day weekend, when many residents were home early Sunday. Officials said one person was detained at the scene after the gunfire. No other injuries were reported by authorities, and no additional suspects had been announced as of Monday.
Records reviewed by authorities show Abreu had prior convictions that include drug possession, false identification, burglary and unlawful carry of a weapon. The firearm charge filed after Sunday’s shooting is tied to his status as a convicted felon. Manslaughter in Texas can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years if a defendant is convicted. As of Monday, court records did not list an attorney for Abreu.
Gonzalez announced the victims’ names and Abreu’s charges Sunday night as investigators continued sorting through witness statements and evidence from the scene. He said Abreu was “reportedly in a dating relationship” with Camarillo. Investigators have not publicly described what weapon was recovered, how many shots were fired or whether surveillance video from the complex captured the confrontation.
Abreu remained in custody Monday at the Harris County Jail. He was scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday, when prosecutors and defense counsel may address the charges, bond status and next steps in the case. The grand jury review of Ruiz’s death had not been assigned a public date.
