Chicago police said a person of interest was taken into custody after the Monday night shooting on North Dearborn Street.
CHICAGO, IL — Two men were critically wounded Monday night after gunfire erupted during an argument on the city’s Near North Side, according to Chicago police.
The shooting happened about 9:17 p.m. in the 800 block of North Dearborn Street, police said. A 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old man were involved in an argument before someone produced a gun. Both men were struck by gunfire and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The 34-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, police said. The 37-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities had not released either man’s name as of Tuesday morning.
FOX 32 Chicago described the confrontation as an exchange of gunfire. Chicago police had not publicly detailed the full sequence of the shooting or said whether both injured men fired weapons.
Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene. A person of interest was also taken into custody, and charges were pending as investigators continued working to determine what led to the gunfire.
Authorities had not released the identity of the person in custody or said what connection that person had to the two wounded men. Police also had not announced any charges by Tuesday morning.
The shooting occurred in the Near North Side area, close to Chicago Avenue, in a heavily developed section of the city that includes residential buildings, businesses and nightlife. Police did not report any additional injuries in connection with the incident.
Investigators had released few other details by Tuesday morning, including whether additional weapons were involved or what specifically prompted the argument. The conditions of both wounded men remained critical in the latest reports.
