CINCINNATI, OH – The tranquil community of Mt. Washington was shattered over the holiday weekend by a tragic incident that left three people dead in a triple homicide. Authorities reported that a gunman opened fire in an apartment building, killing three individuals before attempting to take his own life.
Police confirmed that the gunman, who remains in critical condition, shot and killed Bemnet Deresse and sisters Eden and Feven Adunga. The victims, beloved members of the Ethiopian Orthodox community, were targeted on Sunday afternoon at their residence on Beacon Street.
Community leader Araya Amsalu expressed the deep sorrow felt by the community, noting that the victims were Ethiopian immigrants who had worked hard to build their lives in America. “They were polite, well-mannered, and hardworking individuals,” he said.
The tragedy has drawn family, friends, and community members to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church on Marlowe Avenue in College Hill. Each evening, they gather to pray and mourn the loss of these cherished individuals, their lives cut short under heartbreaking circumstances.
Witnesses reported seeing the gunman circling the apartment building before the crime. Neighbor Doug Matthews recounted a brief interaction with the suspect, noting that he seemed calm and even interacted with his dog. “He wasn’t unfriendly,” Matthews said, “but something felt off.”
As the investigation continues, police have yet to determine a motive or any connection between the gunman and the victims. The lack of answers is causing unease within the community, which is desperate for closure.
The church is organizing a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses for the victims. Community members are invited to pay their respects at the church, where support and solidarity are being offered to those grieving.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading up to this tragedy. The community remains on edge, hoping for answers that might bring some peace to those affected.
