BALTIMORE, MD – Two teenagers have been arrested in Baltimore, Maryland, after a disturbing surveillance video showed a group of assailants attacking and robbing a 66-year-old man. The violent incident, which unfolded on Thursday around 10 p.m., saw the man knocked down and beaten, with one of the suspects even stomping on the victim’s head. Footage showed several individuals rifling through the victim’s pockets before fleeing the scene.
The elderly man, who was returning to his home near Patterson Park at the time of the assault, informed the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) that one of the attackers brandished a gun. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of several lacerations.
An 18-year-old named Montaz Bailey and an unnamed 15-year-old male have been arrested in connection to the crime. The BPD said investigators had also recovered a firearm and the victim’s stolen property. Both of the suspects reportedly have prior arrest records. Accused Bailey already had an issued bench warrant for failing to appear in court concerning a previous car theft charge.
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates authorized an attempted first-degree murder charge against Bailey after examining the video and evidence. BPD officials could not confirm whether Bailey was the individual shown stomping on the victim in the video footage.
BPD Commissioner Richard Worley described the attack as “truly horrific,” expressing deep concern about frequent crimes committed by young individuals in the city and the lack of substantial repercussions for such acts.
The Baltimore Mayor, Brandon Scott, shared Commissioner Worley’s frustration, noting the pattern of repeatedly arresting young offenders who continue to commit crimes after receiving no significant legal accountability. The Mayor commended the police for their swift response but underlined the need for system changes to prevent these recurring crimes.
