Police said two suspects opened fire outside a west Amarillo apartment complex after a dispute tied to an earlier party.
AMARILLO, TX — Two teenagers were killed and 10 other people were injured early Saturday when gunfire erupted outside an Amarillo apartment complex after a group moved there from another party, police said.
Amarillo police were still searching for two suspects Sunday after the shooting at the Westminster Apartments, 2415 Coulter St., near Westgate Parkway. The attack drew a large response from officers, firefighters and medics, and it added to concern in the Texas Panhandle city after a separate burst of deadly violence in March. Police said the motive had not been released, and the conditions of the wounded had not been made public.
Officers were called to the apartment complex at about 2 a.m. Saturday after reports of gunfire. Police said a male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine people were taken to a hospital, where one of them later died. Police later said a total of 12 people had been shot, including the two who died. One victim was identified as Ezekiel Rudy Almazan, 17. The other person killed was described by police as a 16-year-old male. The younger teen’s name had not been released. Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover said investigators found that the suspects had an affiliation with the targeted location and were known to one person at the party.
Police said the shooting followed a party at another location involving juveniles and young adults. According to investigators, several people were asked to leave that first location. Police said they later followed others to the Westminster Apartments, tried to enter an apartment and opened fire with what investigators described as a rifle-style weapon. Surveillance video released by police showed two suspects firing toward the outside of an apartment as people nearby screamed and scattered. Police said the ages of the suspects, their relationship to the victims and their exact link to the gathering remained under investigation. No arrests had been announced by Sunday.
Investigators said they recovered a Glock 9mm handgun on a landing outside Apartment 244, but no weapon was recovered directly from a suspect. Police said cartridge casings found in an alley south of the apartment complex led investigators to believe more than one weapon was used. The shooting scene sat in west Amarillo, about 6 miles from downtown and close to Interstate 40. Officers asked nearby residents and businesses to check doorbell cameras, security systems and other recordings for activity around 2 a.m. Saturday. Police said any video from the area could help identify the suspects or show how they arrived and left.
The shooting came less than six weeks after another violent day in Amarillo. On March 22, six people were killed and 10 others were injured in four separate shootings in the city, according to local authorities. Hover said Amarillo recorded 16 homicides in 2025 and had reached 10 homicides in 2026, including the two deaths from Saturday morning. He said the department had increased patrol staffing since the March shootings and had received help from the Randall County Sheriff’s Department, the Potter County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Hover said the department also was realigning resources to focus on violent crime and traffic safety.
Hover said the department’s newly formed gang unit would be deployed in May as part of the city’s response to violent crime. “This criminal behavior is unacceptable, and the Amarillo Police Department and our regional law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of our community,” Hover said. Police said the shooting appeared tied to the targeted location, but they did not say whether investigators believed the victims were intended targets. Officials also had not said whether the suspects fled in a vehicle, whether more people may have fired shots or whether the handgun found at the scene was used in the attack.
Neighbors described a chaotic scene as shots rang out in the dark. Phillip Thrasher, who lives near the complex, said he came outside and saw young people running in panic. “There was kids running everywhere, just screaming and running,” Thrasher said. He said parents soon arrived to find their children, while others stood nearby in shock. A local photojournalist who lives several blocks from the scene said he was awakened by what sounded like machine gun fire, followed by more shots. Police did not use that phrase in their official description, but they said a rifle-style weapon was involved.
By Sunday, Amarillo police had released video from the scene and said detectives were continuing to review evidence, collect statements and seek the two suspects. The next public update will depend on arrests, victim identifications or new findings from the homicide investigation.
