DOVER, DE – A shooting incident on the Delaware State University campus in the early hours of Sunday, April 21, has resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman. Dover Police has identified the victim as Camay Mitchell DeSilva from Wilmington.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Warren-Franklin Hall. Authorities found DeSilva with a gunshot wound to her upper body at approximately 1:40 a.m. First responders transported the young woman to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.

Delaware State University has confirmed that DeSilva was not a registered student and that no suspect has been identified yet. Right after the incident, the university stepped up police patrols and offered counseling services to the affected parties. Further, it has declared the campus closed on April 21 and April 22.

The DSU President, Tony Allen, decried the incident in a Facebook statement, expressing disdain for individuals who resolve disputes with violence. Allen emphasized the university’s mission to equip global citizens and unequivocally rejected violence of any form, particularly gun violence.

He extended his sympathies to DeSilva’s family and friends, affirming that each member of the university is responsible for creating a safe and respectful campus community.
