Authorities said Matthew Hensley was hiding inside a cabinet, but he has not been charged in Amber Graham’s death.
CLEVELAND, OH — A wanted sex offender was arrested Friday at the same Cleveland home where a missing Tennessee woman was found dead one week earlier, federal authorities said.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Cleveland police SWAT team arrested 43-year-old Matthew Hensley at a home in the 3400 block of Bosworth Road. The U.S. Marshals Service said officers found him hiding inside a cabinet and took him into custody without further incident. Hensley has not been charged in connection with the death of 37-year-old Amber Graham.
Graham, of Spring Hill, Tennessee, was found dead outside the Bosworth Road home on July 3. Cleveland police and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office have not announced her cause or manner of death. Police have said they are waiting for the medical examiner’s findings before deciding whether to open a criminal investigation.
Hensley was wanted by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department for allegedly failing to register his address after a conviction for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to the Marshals Service. He also faces additional unlawful sexual conduct charges stemming from a 2022 indictment. Those allegations have not been resolved in court.
The fugitive task force had searched for Hensley for more than two months and had featured him in public notices about wanted sex offenders in the Cleveland area. Investigators received numerous tips about possible locations before focusing on the Bosworth Road home, authorities said.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said an investigator believed Hensley might have created a concealed space inside the house. Officers searched the property Friday morning and located him behind a wall in an area containing the cabinet, Elliott told local news organizations.
“Predators wanted for crimes involving children will be at the top of our list,” Elliott said in a Marshals Service statement. “Whether it be for new crimes or failing to follow the laws after they are released with respect to address registration. If they don’t follow the law, we will find them.”
Graham had traveled to Cleveland with her 8-year-old daughter, according to friends interviewed by local news organizations. A friend said Graham planned to meet a man she had communicated with through an online video game. Authorities have not publicly identified that person or confirmed any connection between the planned meeting and Graham’s death.
The child arrived alone at a Cleveland fire station July 1, two days before Graham’s body was discovered. Fire officials said she appeared uninjured and carried a telephone number for her grandmother in Tennessee. Police and child welfare workers were contacted, and local reports said the girl was placed in protective custody.
Friends and relatives reported Graham missing after they could no longer reach her and she failed to return to work. Her family filed a missing-person report July 2. A friend said community members in Cleveland helped identify the Bosworth Road property, leading authorities to the location where Graham was later found.
Authorities have not explained how Graham died, how her daughter reached the fire station or whether Hensley had contact with either of them. Hensley was taken to the Cuyahoga County Jail on the unrelated warrant and pending charges while the medical examiner continued investigating Graham’s death.
