Woman arrested for operating fake dental practice after patient gets facial paralysis

BAY SHORE, NY – A Bay Shore woman has been taken into custody by Suffolk County Police for allegedly operating an unauthorized dental practice from her home, authorities announced. The arrest followed reports from three patients, one of whom claims to have suffered nerve damage and facial paralysis due to her treatments.

Upon investigating Yolanda Mejia Carranza’s residence, police discovered a fully equipped dental office. Carranza is accused of performing dental procedures without the necessary training or licensure, raising concerns about the safety and legality of her operations.

Officials suspect that Carranza primarily targeted the Hispanic community, focusing on individuals who lacked health insurance. Many of her patients may have been undocumented immigrants, making them particularly vulnerable to such schemes.

Suffolk County Police believe Carranza has been posing as a dentist for at least eight years. In light of her arrest, they are urging others who may have been treated by Carranza to come forward.

The case highlights broader issues of access to healthcare and the exploitation of marginalized communities. Many individuals without insurance or legal status often resort to unlicensed practitioners due to financial constraints and fear of deportation.

Detectives are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of Carranza’s activities and to identify any additional victims. The department has also reached out to community leaders to assist in spreading the word and encouraging potential victims to report their experiences.

Carranza now faces multiple charges, including practicing dentistry without a license, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are working to ensure that justice is served and that similar incidents are prevented in the future.

Community members are encouraged to seek dental care from licensed professionals and report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
