LAND O’ LAKES, FL – In a harrowing encounter just days ago, a small dog named Dax narrowly escaped the jaws of an alligator. The four-month-old puppy was out for a walk with his owner, Danny Wright, when the unexpected attack occurred.
Despite weighing only five pounds, Dax showed no fear. “He loves everyone,” Wright said, reflecting on the incident near the steep bank behind her Pasco County home. The area, though small, is close to a murky creek where the alligator lurked.
Wright recounted how she had Dax on a leash when she suddenly heard a squeal and felt a tug. Without hesitation, she plunged into the creek to find Dax caught in the grip of an alligator. “I realized it had him by the throat,” she recalled, noting how close it came to a fatal bite.
With remarkable courage, Wright managed to wrestle her puppy free from the predator. “I grabbed him with one arm and threw him up the hill,” she said, though her left arm was still trapped in the alligator’s mouth.
In a desperate bid to save herself, Wright fought back against the five-foot-long reptile, using her free arm to strike it. “I punched and elbowed until it loosened its grip,” she explained, finally freeing herself.
Once safe on the bank, Wright called 911. First responders and a trapper arrived to handle the situation. Reflecting on the ordeal, she expressed relief that she and Dax escaped with only minor injuries. “It could have been so much worse,” she admitted.
Dax, seemingly unfazed, continues to enjoy life, unaware of the danger he faced. Wright urged other dog owners to stay vigilant. “Put your phone down,” she advised, admitting she was distracted at the time.
Though still shaken, Wright is grateful for the outcome. The alligator was eventually relocated by wildlife officials, and both she and Dax are expected to recover fully.
