MEMPHIS, TN – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a woman discovered in a wooded area behind a home on Peppermill Lane. Officers responded around 5:15 p.m. for a welfare check. When they arrived, they found the body of an adult female behind a backyard fence.
Residents of the neighborhood expressed shock at the grisly discovery, given the typically serene atmosphere of their street. One neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, reported hearing that the woman’s son was involved in the incident, allegedly burning her body before discarding it in the woods.
The neighbor described the unsettling experience, stating that smoke was visible and noticeable the night before. Initially, many thought the smell was from cooking.
A family friend of the woman said concerns over her well-being led someone to visit the home, resulting in the dreadful discovery. The son in question is reputedly known within the community for previous run-ins with the law and is said to have grappled with mental health issues.
Despite these claims, authorities have yet to officially identify the victim and suspect or comment on their relationship. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an individual had been detained as the investigation unfolded.
Residents of the usually quiet street are left grappling with the reality that something so horrific could occur in their community. They hope for swift justice and answers as detectives work to uncover the details surrounding this tragic event.
