LAKE OCONEE, GA – The serene waters of Lake Oconee turned into a scene of mystery and tragedy after a weekend birthday celebration took a devastating turn. Jocelyn Wilson and Gary Jones, both from Atlanta, embarked on a small boat outing on Saturday, but the day ended in unforeseen sorrow. Their boat was discovered adrift, and shortly after, Wilson’s lifeless body was recovered from the lake, leaving a trail of unanswered questions.
As the search for Jones enters its sixth day, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills has described the case as more complex than a typical drowning. Investigators are treating this as a death investigation, though details remain scarce. Despite extensive search efforts, including the use of a helicopter, cadaver dogs, and over a dozen boats, there is still no sign of Jones.
The couple was in Putnam County to celebrate Jones’s 50th birthday, having checked into a local hotel before setting out on Lake Oconee in a 12-foot John boat. They launched from Fishel Marina around 3:30 p.m., but within two hours, the boat was found empty, circling in the middle of Richland Creek. A slice of birthday cake and some snacks were discovered aboard, alongside life jackets, yet the couple was nowhere to be found.
Sheriff Sills noted that the boat’s engine would cause it to circle if the occupants fell out, potentially explaining its erratic path. However, the discovery of Wilson’s body about half a mile from the boat’s location adds to the intrigue. Additionally, Jones’s shoes were found floating on the lake’s opposite side, about 15 yards apart, complicating the narrative further.
Wilson’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy, which may shed light on the circumstances of her death. Meanwhile, the sheriff remains tight-lipped about the investigation’s details, maintaining that this is not a straightforward case.
The search for Jones is set to continue, with crews expected to resume their efforts around 10 a.m. The community remains on edge as they await more information, hoping for closure in this perplexing case.
