Woman killed after deadly police shooting

CHESTER, PA – A warrant service in Delaware culminated in a deadly police-involved shooting in Chester, Pennsylvania. Police attempted to serve a warrant to 22-year-old Yazmyn Stewart on the 300 block of North Madison Street in Wilmington on Tuesday morning. However, she succeeded in escaping in a vehicle.

Stewart was wanted for her alleged involvement in a December 2, 2023, shooting on the 500 block of West 8th Street. Her escape from police led to a pursuit that ended on the 2100 block of Market Street in Upper Chichester, PA, where she crashed her vehicle and reportedly fired shots at officers. As a response, two Delaware state troopers opened fire, though it remains unclear whether Stewart was hit.

Following this incident, Stewart allegedly carjacked an SUV and drove it to Chester, where she crashed into a building. She subsequently broke into a home on the 12th and Kerlin streets through a window. The homeowner revealed to Action News that Stewart insisted on being allowed to stay, which the homeowner refused.

Justin Burton, whose girlfriend was in the house at the time, received a call from her claiming that Stewart had broken into the house and appeared to be injured. Despite her injury, Stewart managed to steal the homeowner’s gun and car keys. She was attempting to escape in a maroon sedan when officers opened fire, leading to Stewart’s death.

One Wilmington officer sustained minor injuries and was sent to the hospital. According to investigators, nine police officers discharged their firearms during the incidents. These authorities comprised three from the Wilmington Police Department, five from Delaware State Police, one from the Trainer Borough Police Department, and one from the Chester Police Department. Interstate 95 near the Chester crime scene was temporarily shut down but has since been reopened.
