Angela Mitchell, 48, died days after four people and a dog were found injured at a Mars Hill home.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The death of 48-year-old Angela Mitchell has been ruled a homicide after she died from injuries suffered in a May 12 stabbing on Indianapolis’ southwest side, officials said.
Mitchell’s death adds a second fatality to a violent attack that drew police, medics and animal care workers to a home in the Mars Hill neighborhood. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found two men, two women and a dog with traumatic injuries at the scene. One man died at the home. Mitchell was taken to Eskenazi Hospital and died days later.
Police were called about 2:40 p.m. May 12 to the 3200 block of South Lockburn Street, a residential area near Kentucky Avenue and Holt Road. Officers found three injured people outside the home: two women and one man. The women were taken to a hospital in critical condition, and the man was listed in serious but stable condition. Inside the house, officers found a man who was pronounced dead and a dog with serious injuries. IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said investigators were asking neighbors for help. “IMPD cannot do this without your help,” Thompson said at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office later identified Mitchell as one of the injured people who had been hospitalized after the attack. She died Saturday at Eskenazi Hospital. Her death was ruled a homicide, meaning the injury that caused her death was caused by another person. Police have not released a full account of what happened inside the home or said what led to the violence. Early reports from the scene said the victims had wounds from a penetrating object. Investigators also said the case appeared to be isolated, but they did not immediately release details about a suspect.
The stabbing shook a pocket of the Mars Hill neighborhood where residents described a normally quiet stretch of homes. Thompson said the area was a tight-knit community and that the violence was traumatic for people nearby, including children. “There are children out here,” he said. “It’s very traumatic for them. So we need to be thinking about this community.” Neighbor Cookie Stillwell, who said she had lived in the area for about 10 years, described the scene as unusual for the block. “It’s sad, it really is,” Stillwell said. “It’s very sad that it would happen here because it’s such a nice place.”
Investigators remained at the home for hours after the call, gathering evidence and speaking with possible witnesses. Police said they were looking for surveillance video, witness statements and any other information that could help explain what happened before officers arrived. The injured dog was taken for veterinary care, and Indianapolis Animal Care Services reported the dog was in serious but stable condition after the attack. Police did not release the name of the man who died at the scene in the first reports from the stabbing.
The homicide ruling changes the case from a death investigation tied to a stabbing into a second death being reviewed by homicide detectives. No charges had been publicly announced in Mitchell’s death as of the latest reports. In Marion County, IMPD homicide detectives investigate fatal violence and present findings to prosecutors, who decide whether criminal charges are filed. Police identified Detective Gregory Taylor as a contact for information in the case after the initial response.
Mitchell’s death also widens the toll on the families connected to the Lockburn Street attack. Relatives and friends described her as part of a close circle of loved ones, while neighbors said the violence left people unsettled in a place where many know one another. The investigation has centered on the home, the people found inside and outside it, and the moments before the 911 call brought officers to the block. Officials have not released a final timeline or said whether all the victims knew one another.
The case remained active Tuesday as police continued reviewing evidence from the South Lockburn Street home. The next major step is expected to be an update from investigators or prosecutors if detectives determine whether charges should be filed.
