A 14-year-old is shot by police after trying to run them over in a stolen car

CLEVELAND, OH – A 14-year-old boy is in custody and recovering from a gunshot wound after a confrontation with Cleveland police officers early Saturday. The incident unfolded during an investigation into a string of car break-ins in the city’s Midtown neighborhood.

Authorities reported that the sequence of events began around 2 a.m. when officers discovered a stolen Kia Sportage parked at an abandoned property on 146th Street. Inside the vehicle were the 14-year-old suspect and two other individuals. As detectives approached, the young driver attempted to flee, barreling through a neighboring yard.

Despite efforts to halt the vehicle on Saint Clair Avenue, officers were initially unsuccessful. Later, around 3:30 a.m., police established a perimeter after locating the stolen car once again parked at the original address.

According to investigators, the teenager was either asleep or unconscious inside the vehicle. Upon awakening and seeing the officers, he attempted to escape, leading to a collision with a police car and a nearby garage. The situation escalated when the teen reportedly tried to drive into the officers, prompting one officer to discharge his weapon.

The police have identified two of the suspects, both of whom have prior records involving multiple break-ins. They allegedly removed their ankle monitors before the incident. Surveillance footage obtained during the investigation captured one suspect in action.

Cleveland has seen a troubling rise in car-related crimes, with several teenagers recently apprehended for similar offenses. In one instance, two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old were arrested in a stolen Kia on the east side of the city. Days earlier, another 14-year-old led police on a chase, abandoning a stolen vehicle before fleeing into a home.

Authorities believe these young suspects are linked to numerous car thefts and break-ins throughout the city. The recurring nature of these crimes highlights a growing concern for law enforcement and the community.

As the investigation continues, the city grapples with the challenge of addressing juvenile crime and ensuring public safety. Community leaders and law enforcement are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
