FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A family’s dream vacation turned into a harrowing ordeal when a father and his young daughter went overboard from a Disney cruise ship. The incident, which occurred on the Disney Dream as it returned to Port Everglades from a four-night Bahamian voyage, left fellow passengers and crew in shock.
Witnesses described the dramatic scene as the young girl fell from the fourth deck while playing near the ship’s railing. Her father, reacting instinctively, leaped into the ocean to save her. Both were swiftly rescued by the ship’s crew, who employed quick and efficient measures to bring them back on board safely.
Monica Shannon, a passenger who witnessed the event, recounted the terrifying moments. “It looked like it was going to be a tragedy,” she said. Shannon and her family were taking photos when they saw the girl tumble into the water.
The Disney Dream’s crew received praise for their prompt response, managing to retrieve the father and daughter within minutes. Disney Cruise Lines later issued a statement commending the crew for their exceptional skills and swift actions, which prevented a potential tragedy.
The cruise ship had just completed its journey and was nearing the port in Fort Lauderdale when the incident happened. Passengers reported hearing the commotion and seeing the rescue unfold as the crew launched a rescue boat to retrieve the pair from the water.
The child, who reportedly did not know how to swim, was unharmed, as was her father, who had initially struggled to locate her in the ocean. The ship resumed its course shortly after the rescue, with passengers expressing relief and gratitude for the positive outcome.
Investigations are underway to understand how the child managed to fall overboard. Disney Cruise Lines assured that safety protocols are being reviewed, and they are cooperating fully with authorities.
Shannon urged fellow parents to exercise caution while on board. “Even on a Disney cruise, you’re in the middle of the ocean, and there are still risks,” she advised. “Keep your kids close.”
