A 16-year-old is arrested for armed carjacking two nights in a row

ST. LOUIS, MO – A 16-year-old is in custody after being apprehended for the second consecutive night, accused of leading police on high-speed chases in stolen vehicles. Authorities report that both vehicles were taken from ride-share drivers at gunpoint, raising serious safety concerns within the community.

The most recent incident occurred at 2 a.m., when the teenager allegedly carjacked a Lyft driver in a northern part of the city. The driver reportedly picked up several teens, only to have one pull a gun and demand the vehicle. Police later located the stolen car, initiating a pursuit that ended with the teen’s arrest.

A similar event unfolded the previous night, involving the same teenager in a carjacking that led to another police chase. This incident also involved an Uber driver who was forced out of their vehicle at gunpoint. The proximity of these crimes, occurring just a mile apart, has heightened fears among ride-share drivers and law enforcement.

David Woods, a local ride-share driver, expressed his frustration, stating that the lack of consequences for such actions only emboldens young offenders. “Even if they’re kids, their actions have serious impacts,” Woods said, highlighting the anxiety shared by his colleagues.

Police are currently reviewing body and dash camera footage to identify other teens involved in the incidents. The juvenile justice system in Missouri operates on a point system for charging minors, sparking debate over its effectiveness in dealing with violent crimes.

Law enforcement officials have voiced their concerns, suggesting a review of the juvenile point system. They argue that the current system may not adequately address the severity of crimes committed by minors, potentially leading to more dangerous outcomes.

The four juveniles involved in the first carjacking were released to their guardians, a decision that has drawn criticism from both the public and police officers who feel the justice system is not holding offenders accountable.

As investigations continue, authorities are calling for increased scrutiny of the juvenile justice system to prevent similar incidents. The case has reignited discussions about balancing rehabilitation and accountability for young offenders.
