Yirmar Martinez survived two gunshot wounds after arriving at a dark Cedar Hill property, and police say a suspect has been arrested.
CEDAR HILL, TX — An Amazon Flex delivery driver is recovering after she was shot while trying to deliver a package early Monday at a property in Cedar Hill, south of Dallas, according to the driver and local news reports citing police. Cedar Hill police have confirmed an arrest but have not publicly identified the suspect or announced charges.
Yirmar Martinez, 23, said the shooting happened Oct. 12 as she worked an early-morning delivery route using her own vehicle. Martinez told local news outlets that she arrived at a property on North Cedar Hill Road around 5 a.m. and had trouble finding the entrance because the area was dark. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly said what led the person at the property to open fire.
Martinez said she turned on her high beams while trying to locate the correct place to leave the package. She then moved farther along an access area near the home. Martinez said she saw a man with a gun and tried to make clear that she was working as a delivery driver by showing her Amazon vest and the package she was carrying. She said the man spoke to her in English, but she did not understand what he said before gunfire began.
Martinez was struck twice, according to her account. One bullet grazed her head, while another struck her lower back. She said she tried to drive away as additional shots were fired toward her vehicle. During her escape, Martinez struck a mailbox but continued driving. She eventually encountered a motorcyclist stopped at a traffic light, and the person helped summon emergency assistance, according to Univision’s Dallas-Fort Worth reporting.
Martinez said she was on a video call with her husband, Leonel Campos, who was also working as a delivery driver that morning. Campos told Univision he repeatedly urged her to keep driving after the shooting began. Martinez said she feared she might lose consciousness before reaching medical help. She survived and has since returned home to her family.
Cedar Hill police confirmed to FOX 4 and Univision that a suspect was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Police had not released the person’s identity or publicly detailed possible charges as of Friday. Authorities also had not announced a suspected motive. FOX 4 reported that investigators continued to hold Martinez’s vehicle as evidence after she spoke with police Thursday.
Martinez works through Amazon Flex, a program in which independent delivery partners use their own vehicles and select delivery blocks. She told Univision she had been doing the work for about six months and preferred early-morning shifts because the schedule allowed her to spend more time with her 5-year-old son. Martinez, who is from Venezuela, told FOX 4 she moved to Texas about two years ago.
Amazon said in a statement provided to FOX 4 that the safety of delivery partners is a priority and that the company had contacted Martinez to make sure she knew what support was available. The company said it was reviewing the incident and would cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continued.
The Cedar Hill shooting came days after another Amazon delivery worker reported being fired upon during a delivery in north Houston. In that Oct. 4 case, Houston police said bullets struck the delivery worker’s vehicle but she was not injured. The circumstances of the two cases are separate, and authorities have announced no connection between them.
Martinez is continuing to recover while Cedar Hill police investigate the shooting. Authorities have not publicly released the arrested person’s name, announced formal charges or explained what investigators believe prompted the gunfire. Those details remained unresolved as of Friday.
