Armed CVS Robbery Suspect Shot by New Jersey Police

Authorities said the 65-year-old suspect pointed a gun at an officer during a confrontation Friday afternoon in Gloucester Township.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police shot and wounded a 65-year-old man Friday during an alleged armed robbery at a CVS Pharmacy in Camden County after authorities said he pointed a gun at an officer and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.

Michael Dougherty was taken into custody after the shooting and transported to a hospital for treatment, according to information released by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and reported by local news organizations. Authorities described the shooting as nonfatal. No police officers were injured. Dougherty faces charges including armed robbery and aggravated assault for allegedly pointing a firearm at law enforcement, along with related offenses.

The confrontation happened Friday afternoon at the CVS in the 700 block of College Drive in Gloucester Township. Published accounts citing the prosecutor’s office gave differing preliminary times for the incident, ranging from about 4:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Authorities had not publicly clarified the precise time as of Friday night.

According to the prosecutor’s office account reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, Gloucester Township police were called to the store for a reported robbery. Officers encountered Dougherty, who authorities said was armed with a gun and attempting to rob the pharmacy. Investigators said Dougherty pointed a firearm at an officer during the encounter.

The officer moved to a position of safety and drew a service weapon, authorities said. Police said the officer repeatedly ordered Dougherty to drop the gun, but Dougherty instead moved closer. The officer then fired multiple rounds, striking him. Another officer took Dougherty into custody, according to the prosecutor’s office account.

Police later recovered two weapons from Dougherty, authorities said. Officials had not released additional details about the firearms or explained what happened inside the pharmacy before officers arrived. They also had not disclosed whether employees or customers were inside during the confrontation.

The shooting brought a large police response to the shopping area. Television helicopter footage showed patrol vehicles surrounding the CVS and police tape closing off parts of the parking lot while investigators worked at the scene. A command post was also established, and the store and surrounding area remained restricted for hours during the investigation.

A witness interviewed by 6abc said she was at a nearby business when she heard what sounded like one or two gunshots and saw people running from the area. Authorities said no officers were injured, and there were no reports of other people being struck by gunfire.

Early reports from the prosecutor’s office provided few details beyond describing the person who was shot as an armed suspect involved in an encounter with two Gloucester Township police officers. Authorities later released additional information identifying Dougherty and describing the alleged robbery and confrontation. Those allegations have not been proven in court.

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation remains active. Officials had not released the names of the officers involved or further information about Dougherty’s medical condition as of Friday night. Additional details are expected as investigators review the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.
