DETROIT, MI – Maritime celebrations turned deadly on Sunday when two party-goers, a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, were fatally shot at a block party on Detroit’s east side. The incident also injured more than a dozen people, according to Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police Department.
The female victim reportedly died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. The male victim, who was shot in the back, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Among the injured were a critically wounded 17-year-old girl, 13 individuals in temporary serious condition, and three who were stable.
Despite the tragedy, no arrests have been made so far. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan expressed his sorrow over the violence that unfolded during the block parties over the weekend. The mayor announced plans for a comprehensive briefing with Police Chief James White to address the “spike in violence” and present strategies to contain it.
This tragic incident was not an isolated one. John Roach, the mayor’s spokesman, indicated that multiple instances of violence were reported at other block parties during the weekend. More specific details were awaited.
