Boy killed by falling tree on school field trip

HOWELL, MI – A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life after a tree fell on him during a school field trip at a southeastern Michigan nature center, authorities reported. Declan Carter was participating in an overnight camping trip with classmates from Our Lady of Victory Catholic School when the accident occurred at Howell Nature Center on Thursday afternoon, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. Despite being airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical care, he ultimately lost his life.

The incident occurred roughly 55 miles northwest of Detroit. Sheriff Michael Murphy described the moment of the accident: chaperones were instructing the children on fire-making techniques when they heard a loud cracking sound. The group attempted to flee, but the 20-foot tree, which had a rotted trunk, fell and struck Declan on the head.

“It’s a tragic accident that just makes absolutely no sense,” Sheriff Murphy told local media. Declan’s loss is particularly felt in Northville, where his father, John Carter, serves as a city council member. Mayor Brian Turnbull expressed condolences on behalf of the community.

In response to the incident, Howell Nature Center CEO Tina Bruce stated the center is working closely with authorities to investigate the circumstances. She announced the facility would remain closed on Friday to allow staff time to process the devastating event and gather facts.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family during this difficult time,” Bruce said.
