A 24-year-old nurse from California, Mirelle Mateus, was tragically discovered dead by her mother at her ex-boyfriend’s Anaheim apartment. The ex-boyfriend, Aaron Romo, 36, was out on bail for domestic violence charges at the time.
Mateus’ mother, Alice, went to Romo’s residence on March 17 after sensing something was amiss. She discovered her daughter’s body in the bathroom, stating that the system had failed her as she found Mirelle, not the police.
Romo has a history of abuse, and the family had filed for a restraining order against him in late 2021. On the day Mirelle’s body was found, Anaheim police responded to reports of suspicious circumstances at Romo’s South Union Street apartment. Police later arrested Romo on a murder charge in Riverside County.
Authorities are asking anyone with previous contact with Romo to come forward, as they believe he may have assaulted other women in the past. No additional information has been released regarding the cause of death or a possible motive, as the investigation is ongoing.
Mirelle’s mother urged other women who might know Romo to speak out and not be afraid. She also encouraged victims of domestic violence to report incidents to prevent similar tragedies.
Romo has a history of domestic violence cases, including one involving his ex-wife from December 5. He was out on bond while the case was pending. He was already facing charges of corporal injury on a spouse, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, and battery. Romo had pleaded not guilty.
In another case, a woman from a previous relationship with Romo filed a restraining order. She cited multiple instances of abuse, including rape, assault, and death threats.
Mirelle’s sister, Sandy Caceros, has started a GoFundMe account to support the family. Mirelle was described as a hardworking, loving daughter, sister, and aunt with a generous heart.
Caceros vowed to do whatever it takes to bring justice for her sister, emphasizing the need to ensure Romo is imprisoned for life to prevent further harm to others.
