FLUSHING, NY – A community is seeking answers after a sudden fire at a local pizza shop claimed the life of a 76-year-old woman. On July 4th, the victim found herself trapped in the bathroom of Singha’s Pizza on Casino Boulevard when a blaze erupted unexpectedly.
The fire reportedly started when an e-bike, charging near the restroom, exploded, creating a deadly wall of flames. Witnesses describe the horrific scene where the woman, who had merely stepped away for a moment, became ensnared by the inferno.
City officials have identified this tragedy as the first fatal incident this year linked to a lithium-ion battery fire. Despite her efforts to escape, the woman managed to exit the bathroom but could not make it out of the restaurant.
Fire marshals, who announced the cause of the fire on Tuesday, emphasized that e-bikes should always be kept outside and away from exits to prevent such catastrophic events. This year alone, there have been 122 battery fires, slightly surpassing last year’s numbers.
The victim leaves behind two sons and four granddaughters, along with a grieving community. Her family expressed their devastation, noting the profound loss of a beloved elder under such tragic circumstances.
As the investigation continues, the incident raises pressing questions about safety regulations and the need for preventive measures in public spaces.
Authorities continue to urge business owners and residents alike to be cautious with e-bike batteries, highlighting the importance of proper storage and charging practices.
