DALLAS, TX — A 22-year-old man remained critically injured after he was stabbed during an early-morning fight outside a business in Dallas’ Bishop Arts neighborhood, while police and his family sought witnesses and video that could help identify the person responsible.
Abraham Herrera was injured shortly before 2 a.m. Sept. 12 in the 500 block of North Madison Avenue. Dallas police records list the incident as an aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon and show it was reported at about 1:38 a.m. Police said a suspect stabbed the victim and fled. No arrest or public suspect description had been announced as of Friday.
The confrontation began with a verbal argument inside Dos Amigos, a restaurant and bar on Madison Avenue, according to information Dallas police provided to local news outlets. Police said the dispute continued after the people involved were sent outside, where Herrera was stabbed. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities initially described Herrera’s condition as stable, according to Univision’s reporting on the police account. His family later said his condition was far more serious. Family members told FOX 4 that Herrera was placed in a medically induced coma at Methodist Hospital in Oak Cliff. They said the stabbing caused a serious wound to his chest and heart.
Herrera’s relatives said he became involved in the confrontation while defending his girlfriend. His aunt, Brenda Trevino, told FOX 4 that Herrera believed the confrontation would be a fistfight and did not initially realize he had been stabbed. The family’s description of what led to the attack goes beyond the limited details publicly confirmed by police.
Relatives also told Univision that someone in Herrera’s group had warned security workers that people involved in the dispute might have knives. The family questioned why the groups were sent outside together rather than separated. That account has not been independently established, and Univision reported that the business had not provided a statement about the family’s concerns by the time its report was published.
Dallas police have continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. The department’s case is listed under report number 134388-2026. Police have not publicly identified a suspect or released a description, and investigators have not announced what charges could result if a suspect is identified and arrested.
The family has asked people who were in the Bishop Arts area that morning to provide investigators with cellphone recordings or other video of the confrontation. FOX 4 reported that police were also seeking information and video connected to the fight and directed potential evidence to Detective Darren Burch.
Herrera’s relatives said several days after the attack that he remained in intensive care and had not regained consciousness. Their account underscores a change from the initial police description of his condition, but authorities had not released a detailed medical update. Police have also not publicly established a motive beyond describing the encounter as a dispute that escalated into violence.
The investigation remained active Friday, with no publicly announced arrest. Police had not released the suspect’s identity or description, leaving witness accounts and available video among the information investigators were seeking as they worked to determine exactly what happened.
