A 22-year-old woman died at an apartment complex Wednesday, and police say the case may be connected to a domestic incident.
WICHITA, KS — Wichita police are searching for a person of interest after a 22-year-old woman was fatally shot Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in west Wichita.
Officers were called to the 300 block of South Tyler Road near Maple Street at about 6:20 p.m. Oct. 7. Police found the woman inside an apartment with a gunshot wound to her upper body. Officers and Sedgwick County emergency medical personnel attempted to help her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified Xavion Dates as a person of interest in the homicide investigation. Investigators said they believe Dates may have information about the shooting or may have been responsible for it. Authorities consider him armed and dangerous. Police had not announced an arrest as of Thursday.
Andrew Ford, chief public information officer for the Wichita Police Department, said investigators believe the shooting may have been related to a domestic incident. Police have not publicly detailed the relationship between Dates and the woman or released information explaining what led to the shooting.
Investigators said Dates fled after the shooting and allegedly carjacked a white Toyota RAV4 in the 300 block of Turquoise Lane. The vehicle’s owner was not injured. Police later recovered the SUV near Rock Road and Central Avenue, but Dates was not found with it.
Police said Dates was last seen wearing a McDonald’s uniform and black pants. Authorities have warned that he should not be approached. Investigators continued searching areas connected to the case and gathering information about his whereabouts.
The woman’s name had not been publicly released in the reports available Thursday. Early information about her age was inconsistent, but updated reporting after corrections from the Wichita Police Department identified her as 22 years old.
The investigation remains active. Wichita police have asked anyone who sees Dates or has information about his whereabouts or the shooting to call 911 immediately. No criminal charges connected to the woman’s death had been announced as of the latest reports.
