The Broward Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video from a hotel near Gulf Stream Way.
DANIA BEACH, FL — Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are searching for suspects after a woman said she was held at gunpoint during an attempted carjacking last month outside a Dania Beach hotel.
The case became public Thursday after deputies released surveillance video from the hotel and asked for help identifying the armed suspect. Investigators said the victim escaped without handing over her keys, but the incident moved from the parking lot to the lobby area, where workers were inside and the suspect was seen near the entrance with a handgun.
The attempted carjacking happened just after 8 p.m. on June 6 at the Courtyard by Marriott near the 400 block of Gulf Stream Way, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Detectives said the victim was loading equipment into the trunk of her car in the parking lot when two people approached her. One of them demanded the victim’s keys. When the victim refused, investigators said the person who made the demand pulled a handgun from her waistband, pointed it at the victim and demanded the keys again. Miranda Grossman, a public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, called it “quite a brazen crime.”
The victim ran from the parking lot and entered the hotel lobby, where she sought help from a manager and an employee, deputies said. Surveillance video released by BSO shows the victim moving quickly into the lobby as the armed person follows toward the entrance. The video shows the person outside the front doors gesturing with what appears to be a handgun. Deputies have not released the victim’s name. They also have not said whether the suspects arrived in another vehicle, left on foot or had any prior contact with the victim before the confrontation.
The hotel sits near Griffin Road, Interstate 95 and the Dania Beach Tri-Rail station, an area with regular hotel, airport and commuter traffic. The location is just west of the city’s beach corridor and near routes used by travelers moving between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades and central Broward County. Investigators focused on the hotel’s parking lot and lobby video after the victim reported the encounter. No injuries were reported in the initial accounts released by authorities, and deputies did not say whether anything was taken from the victim’s car.
Detectives are treating the case as an attempted armed carjacking investigation. As of Thursday, no arrest had been announced, and BSO had not released the suspect’s name. Officials described the person who demanded the keys as a woman and said a second person was present during the approach in the parking lot. Deputies have not publicly detailed the second person’s role beyond saying two people approached the victim. The Sheriff’s Office said investigators are trying to identify and locate the armed subject seen in the surveillance footage.
The video gave investigators a public lead nearly a month after the incident. It shows the victim’s path from the parking lot into the lobby and the armed person’s movement toward the hotel doors. The footage also places hotel staff close to the danger as the victim sought help inside. BSO did not say whether detectives have recovered the firearm or whether they believe the same suspects are connected to any other cases in the area. Officials also did not release a detailed physical description beyond what can be seen in the surveillance video.
The case remained open Thursday, July 9, with detectives seeking to identify the armed suspect and the second person who approached the victim. The next step in the investigation is the review of tips, surveillance footage and any evidence from the hotel property.
