Police said the man who died had tried to help after a reported sexual assault.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A father was taken into custody Sunday after police said he fatally shot the wrong man outside an Eastwick hotel while responding to his daughter’s report that she had been sexually assaulted.
Philadelphia police said the shooting unfolded during an early morning response to the Hampton Inn on the 8600 block of Bartram Avenue, near Philadelphia International Airport. Investigators said the father believed the man he shot was involved in the alleged assault, but police later said the victim had no role in the reported rape. The case now includes two investigations: a homicide inquiry and a Special Victims Unit investigation into the sexual assault report.
Officers were called to the hotel around 4:40 a.m. Sunday for a report of rape. Police said two young women had been staying at the hotel when one of them contacted her father and reported that she was being sexually assaulted. The father went to the hotel armed with a gun, police said. Investigators said he opened fire in the parking lot at a man he believed was the attacker. Police said the man who was shot was instead a bystander who had tried to help the young woman.
The wounded man was found with gunshot injuries to the chest and was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he later died, police said. Authorities had not released the names or ages of the people involved as of Monday. Police said the father was taken into custody at the scene and a gun was recovered. Investigators also found seven shell casings at the hotel. Police said the shooting victim was not connected to the alleged assault, and officials had not publicly identified a suspect in the reported rape.
The Hampton Inn sits in Eastwick, a Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood close to the airport, hotels, rental car lots and major roadways. The area often draws travelers, airport workers and people passing through the city. The early morning call brought police to a hotel setting where investigators had to separate a reported sexual assault from a shooting that police said was based on mistaken identity. The victim’s death turned the scene into a homicide investigation, while the assault report was assigned to detectives who handle sex crimes.
Police had not announced charges against the father by Monday, and authorities said the investigation remained active. Detectives were expected to review witness statements, shell casings, hotel surveillance video and any calls made before officers arrived. The Special Victims Unit is investigating the rape report, while homicide detectives are handling the fatal shooting. Officials had not said whether a court appearance had been scheduled or whether prosecutors had approved charges.
The case drew attention because police described the man who died as someone trying to help, not the person accused in the assault report. Investigators said the father’s belief about the man’s identity was wrong. The shooting also left several key facts unresolved, including what happened inside or near the hotel before the father arrived, who made contact with the victim, and whether police have identified the person accused in the sexual assault report.
As of Monday, police said the father remained in custody, the shooting victim had died at the hospital and the sexual assault report was still under review by the Special Victims Unit. The next major step is a decision on possible charges as detectives complete interviews and evidence review.
