Drive-By Shooting Kills Man, Wounds Three Others

Police said a 15-year-old boy was among those shot Monday night near West Madison Street.

CHICAGO, IL — A man was killed and three other people were wounded Monday night when someone in an SUV opened fire on a South Austin sidewalk, Chicago police said.

The shooting put a busy West Side block under a heavy police presence just before the start of a warm June night. Area Four detectives are investigating, and police had not announced any arrests or named a suspect by early Tuesday.

Police said the gunfire broke out shortly before 7:30 p.m. in the 0-100 block of North Lockwood Avenue, near West Madison Street. A 15-year-old boy and three men, ages 32, 34 and 36, were on the sidewalk when an SUV pulled up alongside them. Someone inside the vehicle took out a gun and fired at the group, police said. A witness told CBS Chicago that the shots sounded like “the Fourth of July and machine guns going off.”

The 32-year-old man was shot in the face and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name had not been released early Tuesday. The 15-year-old boy was shot in the right leg and taken to Mount Sinai in fair condition. A 34-year-old man was shot in the right leg and taken to the same hospital in critical condition. A 36-year-old man was shot in the right flank and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Neighbors and onlookers gathered near the scene as officers marked evidence on the ground. Police kept people back from the crime scene, and some officers were seen carrying long guns while the investigation continued. The block is in South Austin, a West Side neighborhood close to the Madison Street corridor and several blocks west of Columbus Park. Police did not say whether the four people who were shot were targeted or whether anyone in the SUV had been identified.

Violence interrupters also went to the scene and spoke with relatives of the victims. Hyson Harper with Anchor Chicago said the shooting hit during a time of year when more people are outside. “We want you all to pray for the families and pray for our city,” Harper said. He said the group’s focus is on reducing violence across Chicago and supporting families after shootings. Harper also described the area as a quiet part of the neighborhood.

Area Four detectives are leading the case. Police had not released a vehicle description beyond saying the shooter was in an SUV. They also had not said how many shots were fired, what type of gun was used, or whether video from nearby homes or businesses had been recovered. No charges had been filed as of early Tuesday, and officials said no further details were immediately available.

The case remains an active homicide and shooting investigation. The next major update is expected when police release the name of the man who died, announce an arrest, or provide more details from Area Four detectives.
